Date Difference Calculator
Pick two dates to see how far apart they are — in total days, in working days with weekends excluded, and broken down into years, months and days. Leap years are handled by the full Gregorian rule.
Defaults to today
Pick two dates to see the difference between them.
How to use this tool
- The start date defaults to today. Change it to any date you need.
- Pick the end date. It can be before the start date — the result is the same either way.
- Read the total days, the weekday count, and the years/months/days breakdown.
Formula and method
total days = (end as UTC midnight − start as UTC midnight) ÷ 86,400,000Both dates are converted to midnight UTC before subtracting. That removes daylight-saving transitions from the arithmetic entirely — without it, a range spanning a clock change would come out as 30.958 days instead of 31.
Worked examples
1 January 2024 to 1 March 2024
- January has 31 days, February has 29 in 2024 because it is a leap year
- 31 + 29 = 60
60 days apart.
Working days in the first week of January 2024
- 1 January 2024 was a Monday
- Counting to 8 January gives seven days
- Two of those are Saturday and Sunday
5 weekdays and 2 weekend days.
Notes and limitations
- The count is exclusive of the end date: from 1 January to 2 January is one day, not two. If you need to include both endpoints, add one.
- Weekday counting excludes Saturdays and Sundays only. Public holidays vary by country and are not deducted.
- Dates are treated as calendar dates. Time of day and time zones are ignored entirely, so the answer is the same wherever you are.
- Months are calendar months of differing lengths, so the years/months/days breakdown will not match total days divided by 30.
Frequently asked questions
How many days are between two dates?
Pick both dates above and the total appears immediately. The calculation counts whole days and includes every leap day in the range.
Does this count working days?
It counts weekdays — every day that is not a Saturday or Sunday. Public holidays differ by country and region, so they are not deducted; subtract them yourself for a true working-day figure.
Is the end date included?
No. The result is the number of days between the two dates, so 1 to 2 January is one day. Add one if you need to count both days inclusively, which is common for booking durations.
How are leap years handled?
By the full Gregorian rule: years divisible by four are leap years, except those divisible by 100, unless they are also divisible by 400. So 1900 was not a leap year but 2000 was.
