  • A US pint is 16 US fluid ounces; an imperial pint is 20 imperial fluid ounces. The fluid ounces themselves are also slightly different sizes.
  • US cups here are the 236.588 ml legal-definition cup. Some recipes use a 250 ml metric cup instead, and Japanese recipes use 200 ml — check the source.
  • Dry volumes such as the US dry pint are different again and are not included, since they are rarely needed outside US agriculture.

Why is a US pint smaller than a UK pint?

The two systems diverged in the 19th century. Britain redefined the gallon in 1824 around the volume of ten pounds of water; the US kept the older wine gallon. A US pint is 473 ml against the imperial 568 ml.

How many millilitres are in a cup?

The US legal cup is 236.588 ml. Many modern recipes round it to 240 ml, and a metric cup is 250 ml — for baking, that difference matters.

Are fluid ounces a measure of weight?

No, they measure volume. An ounce by weight is a different unit entirely, and for anything other than water the two do not correspond.
