As it appears in your employer's records

Enter the rent and the months to see the receipts you will get.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the tenant’s name as your employer has it, and the monthly rent.
  2. Enter the landlord’s name and, if the yearly rent is above ₹1 lakh, their PAN.
  3. Enter the address of the rented property, and optionally the landlord’s own address.
  4. Choose the first and last month — the current financial year is filled in — and how the rent was paid.
  5. Press Create rent receipts, download the PDF, print it and have the landlord sign each receipt.

Worked examples

₹18,000 a month for April 2026 to March 2027

  1. 12 receipts on 4 A4 pages
  2. Yearly rent: 18,000 × 12 = ₹2,16,000, above ₹1 lakh, so the landlord’s PAN is needed

Each receipt reads “Received with thanks from … the sum of Rs. 18,000.00 (Rupees Eighteen Thousand Only) … for the period 1 April 2026 to 30 April 2026”, with its own number and date.

Notes and limitations

  • Receipts only support an HRA claim under the old tax regime. The new regime, the default, does not allow the HRA exemption. Use the HRA calculator to see how much of your HRA would be exempt.
  • Employers usually ask for the landlord’s PAN when rent is more than ₹1 lakh a year. Where the landlord has no PAN, they typically accept a signed declaration from the landlord instead.
  • Receipts for cash payments above ₹5,000 are customarily signed across a ₹1 revenue stamp, so the PDF leaves a box for one when you choose cash. Bank transfer or UPI leaves a payment record that employers often prefer.
  • A receipt is evidence only once the landlord signs it. Employers and the tax department can also ask for the rent agreement and proof of payment, so keep those.
  • Each receipt is dated the last day of its month. Rent you pay to your parents can be claimed if they genuinely own the house and declare the rent as their income.
  • Everything is drawn by your browser. The PAN and addresses are not uploaded or stored.
  • The PDF’s built-in fonts cover English letters only, so write names and addresses in English. The ₹ sign is printed as “Rs.”.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a rent receipt for every month?

Most employers ask for one per month, or at least one per quarter, for the period of the claim. Generating a receipt for every month avoids a second request.

Is the landlord’s PAN compulsory?

When the rent is above ₹1 lakh a year, employers ask for it before allowing the exemption. Below that, it is optional.

Do I need a revenue stamp?

Only on cash payments above ₹5,000, by long-standing practice. Rent paid by bank transfer, UPI or cheque does not need one.

Can I claim HRA under the new tax regime?

No. The HRA exemption is available only under the old regime, so receipts make a difference only if you choose it.

Are online rent receipts valid?

A receipt is valid because of what it records and the landlord’s signature, not how it was made. These follow the usual format: names, amount in figures and words, period, property address and the landlord’s PAN.
