Notes and limitations

  • Characters are counted as a person sees them. An emoji is one character here, even though JavaScript stores a simple one as two units and a family emoji as eight.
  • Platforms count differently. X counts most emoji as two characters, and some systems count an SMS with any non-Latin character in 70-character segments rather than 160. Use this as a close guide, not a guarantee.
  • Meta descriptions are truncated by pixel width rather than a hard character count, so 160 is a rule of thumb. A description full of wide letters will cut off sooner.
  • Everything runs in your browser. Your text is never uploaded to a server, which matters when what you are working on is a draft, a client list or anything else you would rather not send anywhere.

Do spaces count as characters?

Usually yes — most limits count them. Both totals are shown, since academic work often specifies a count without spaces.

How many characters is an emoji?

One, as far as this counter is concerned, because that is what you see. Behind the scenes a simple emoji occupies two UTF-16 units and a combined one such as a family emoji occupies eight, which is why some platforms count them as more.

How long should a meta description be?

Around 150 to 160 characters. Search engines truncate by pixel width rather than character count, so leaving a little headroom is wise.

How many characters fit in one SMS?

160 for plain Latin text. Include a single character outside the basic GSM set — an emoji, or many accented letters — and the whole message switches to a 70-character segment size.
