Converters

Celsius to Fahrenheit Converter

Enter a temperature in Celsius to get it in Fahrenheit. Unlike most conversions this is not a single multiplication — the two scales have different zero points as well as different degree sizes, which is why the formula has a +32 in it.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the temperature in Celsius, using a minus sign for below freezing.
  2. Read the Fahrenheit result, or use the table for common temperatures.

Formula and method

°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32

The 9/5 accounts for a Celsius degree being 1.8 times the size of a Fahrenheit degree; the 32 accounts for the scales starting in different places.

Worked examples

Body temperature

  1. 37 × 9/5 = 66.6
  2. 66.6 + 32 = 98.6

37 °C is 98.6 °F.

A warm summer day

  1. 30 × 1.8 = 54
  2. 54 + 32 = 86

30 °C is 86 °F.

Notes and limitations

  • A quick mental approximation is to double the Celsius figure and add 30. For 20 °C that gives 70 against a true 68 — close enough for weather, not for cooking.
  • This converts a temperature, not a temperature difference. A rise of 10 °C is a rise of 18 °F, not 50 °F.
  • Below −273.15 °C is absolute zero and the converter rejects it, because no such temperature exists.

Frequently asked questions

What is 20 degrees Celsius in Fahrenheit?

68 °F — a mild room temperature.

What is normal body temperature in Fahrenheit?

37 °C is 98.6 °F. Normal actually spans roughly 36.1–37.2 °C (97–99 °F) and varies through the day.

Is there a quick way to convert in my head?

Double it and add 30. It runs a couple of degrees high in the everyday range but is fine for deciding what to wear.

At what temperature do Celsius and Fahrenheit meet?

−40 degrees, the only point where both scales read the same.
