How to use this tool

  1. Type directly into the box, or paste text from a document.
  2. The counts update on every keystroke — there is nothing to submit.
  3. Reading time assumes 225 words a minute and speaking time 150, which are typical adult rates.
  4. Use Clear to empty the box before starting again.

Notes and limitations

  • Words are counted using your browser's word-boundary rules, which means text in Chinese, Japanese and Thai is counted correctly. Splitting on spaces would report an entire Chinese sentence as a single word.
  • Hyphenated words count as one word, matching how most word processors behave.
  • Reading speed varies widely — 175 to 300 words a minute is a normal range for adults, and technical material is slower. Treat the estimate as a guide.
  • Everything runs in your browser. Your text is never uploaded to a server, which matters when what you are working on is a draft, a client list or anything else you would rather not send anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

How is a word counted?

Anything the browser recognises as a word-like segment counts as one. That means punctuation on its own does not count, and languages that do not separate words with spaces are still counted properly.

Does this match Microsoft Word's count?

Usually, though small differences are normal. Word processors differ on things like hyphenated compounds, numbers and text inside footnotes, so a variation of a word or two on a long document is expected.

How long does it take to read 1,000 words?

About four and a half minutes silently at an average pace, or nearly seven minutes read aloud. Dense or technical material takes considerably longer.

Is my text saved anywhere?

No. The counting happens entirely in your browser and nothing is transmitted. Closing the tab discards the text.
