Salary to Hourly Calculator
Enter your pay and how often you receive it, then set the hours you actually work. The standard answer assumes a 40-hour week for 52 weeks; if your week is 37.5 or 48 hours, or some holidays are unpaid, the hourly figure changes more than you might expect.
52 if holidays are paid; fewer if they are not

How to use this tool
- Enter your pay and choose whether it is per hour, day, week, fortnight, month or year.
- Set your hours per week and days per week.
- Set the weeks you are paid for in a year: 52 for a salaried job with paid holidays, fewer for contract or hourly work where time off is unpaid.
- Read the converted figure and every other pay period underneath.
Formula and method
Annual pay from an hourly rate
Yearly = Hourly × hours per week × paid weeks per yearHourly rate from a salary
Hourly = Yearly ÷ (hours per week × paid weeks per year)Other periods
Monthly = Yearly ÷ 12; Weekly = Yearly ÷ weeks; Daily = Yearly ÷ (days × weeks)A month is not four weeks. Twelve monthly payments cover 52 weeks, so a monthly salary is about 4.33 weeks of pay — which is why multiplying a weekly wage by four understates the monthly figure.
Worked examples
$50,000 a year, 40 hours a week, 52 weeks
- Hours in a year: 40 × 52 = 2,080
- Hourly: 50,000 ÷ 2,080 = $24.04
$24.04 an hour, $961.54 a week and $4,166.67 a month.
£30,000 a year on a 37.5-hour week
- Hours in a year: 37.5 × 52 = 1,950
- Hourly: 30,000 ÷ 1,950 = £15.38
£15.38 an hour — about 96p more than the same salary on a 40-hour week.
$25 an hour, back to a salary
- Yearly: 25 × 40 × 52 = $52,000
$52,000 a year, or $4,333.33 a month.
Notes and limitations
- Everything is gross pay, before income tax, social security, pension or other deductions. Take-home pay depends on country and personal circumstances and is not calculated here.
- Overtime, bonuses, commission and allowances are not included unless you add them to the pay you enter.
- Paid holidays keep the weeks at 52 because you are paid for them. For hourly or contract work with unpaid time off, lower the weeks to see your effective rate.
- Standard full-time hours vary: 40 is common in the US, 37.5 in much of the UK, and many Indian employers work to a 48-hour week.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?
Divide the yearly salary by the number of hours you work in a year. For a 40-hour week and 52 paid weeks that is 2,080 hours, so a $50,000 salary is about $24.04 an hour.
How many working hours are there in a year?
2,080 on a 40-hour week (40 × 52), 1,950 on a 37.5-hour week, and 2,496 on a 48-hour week. Public holidays and paid leave are usually still paid, so they are normally included.
Is monthly pay four times weekly pay?
No. A year has 52 weeks, not 48, so a month averages about 4.33 weeks. Monthly pay is weekly pay × 52 ÷ 12.
Should I compare a contract rate to a salary directly?
Not without adjusting. A contractor is usually not paid for holidays or sick days and pays their own benefits and pension. Lower the paid weeks to the weeks you expect to bill before comparing the yearly figure with a salary.
