Fahrenheit to Celsius Converter
Enter a temperature in Fahrenheit to get it in Celsius. Subtract 32 before multiplying — doing it the other way round is the most common mistake with this conversion, and it gives an answer that is wrong by nearly 18 degrees.

How to use this tool
- Enter the temperature in Fahrenheit.
- Read the Celsius result, or use the reference table.
Formula and method
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9The subtraction must come first. Multiplying before subtracting is the usual error and produces a badly wrong figure.
Worked examples
A hot day at 100 °F
- 100 − 32 = 68
- 68 × 5/9 = 37.78
37.8 °C.
A 350 °F oven
- 350 − 32 = 318
- 318 × 5/9 = 176.67
About 177 °C — usually set as 180 °C.
Notes and limitations
- Subtract 32 first, then multiply. Reversing the order is the single most common mistake in this direction.
- Ovens are set in round numbers, so 350 °F is conventionally treated as 180 °C rather than 176.7 °C.
- For a rough mental figure, subtract 30 and halve. 70 °F gives 20 against a true 21.1 °C.
Frequently asked questions
What is 100 degrees Fahrenheit in Celsius?
37.78 °C — just above normal body temperature.
What is 350 °F in Celsius for baking?
176.7 °C, which recipes and oven dials round to 180 °C. Fan ovens are usually set 20 °C lower again.
Why do I subtract 32 first?
Because the scales have different zero points. The 32 removes that offset so the remaining number is a pure difference, which can then be scaled by 5/9. Scaling first would scale the offset too.
What is 72 °F in Celsius?
22.2 °C — a typical comfortable indoor temperature.
