Formula and method

miles = kilometres ÷ 1.609344

Equivalently, multiply by 0.621371. The mile is defined as exactly 1,609.344 metres, so this is exact.

Notes and limitations

  • The factor is exact by definition, not an approximation.
  • A nautical mile is a different unit again, 1,852 m, and is not what road signs mean.
  • For a rough mental conversion, multiply kilometres by 0.6 — it under-reads by about 3%, which is close enough for judging a distance.
