Notes and limitations

  • Tyre pressures are gauge pressure — the amount above atmospheric — not absolute pressure. Converting between units does not change that; it stays a gauge figure.
  • One standard atmosphere is exactly 101,325 pascals by definition. The psi and mmHg factors are rounded physical values rather than exact definitions.
  • Weather reports use hectopascals (hPa) and millibars interchangeably: they are the same size.
  • Blood pressure is quoted in mmHg, and by convention is never converted to other units in clinical use.

About 36 psi. Check the figure on the door pillar or in the manual, and set it when the tyres are cold.

Is a bar the same as an atmosphere?

Almost, but not exactly. One atmosphere is 101,325 Pa and one bar is 100,000 Pa, so an atmosphere is about 1.3% higher.

Are millibars and hectopascals the same?

Yes, identical. Both are 100 pascals, which is why weather services moved from millibars to hectopascals without any numbers changing.
